Initially a seaplane carrier, Chiyoda was later converted to an aircraft carrier, like her sister ship Chitose. After the Battle of Midway, both ships were converted to light aircraft carriers, with Chiyoda having a capacity for 30 aircraft. Post-conversion, she was involved in fleet escort and participated in the Battle of Mariana. In the Battle of Leyte, she was bombarded by US cruisers and eventually sank.
